The WIC program makes sure that pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five get the nutrition they need to be strong and healthy. Our staff, which includes nutritionists and nurse educators, assesses the nutrition needs of participants and writes “food prescriptions” for specific food items. These vouchers are redeemed at participating local grocery stores.

In addition to nutrition education and early prenatal care, WIC emphasizes breastfeeding, monitoring children’s growth and immunization status, smoking cessation, alcohol & substance abuse screening and referral, lead screening, and referral to Child Health Plus and Medicaid.

To qualify for WIC, families must meet nutritional risk income guidelines which are very generous. Many working families qualify!

ADOLESCENT PREGNANCY PROGRAM

The Adolescent Pregnancy Program(APP) is offered through WIC in Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties. APP provides pregnant and parenting teens with the extra support they need to deliver healthy babies and keep them healthy.

Teens become involved in the APP by enrolling in the WIC program. This ensures that participating parents and their infants will receive nutritious food when they need it most. Nurse educators help pregnant teenagers to access early and on-going prenatal care and provide information about all aspects of pregnancy. Health teaching includes information about nutrition, childbirth education, and the risks of using alcohol, drugs or tobacco during pregnancy. APP staff can connect teens with programs that provide help with education, job training and childcare.

After the baby's birth, APP staff offers assistance with parenting skills for a minimum of one year. Parents learn about how their baby will grow, immunizations needed, how and what to feed their baby, and are given help with specific parenting concerns.
